The retina is the part of the eye that does the actual seeing to a thin layer of cells at the back of the eye that converts light into the signals your brain reads as images. When something goes wrong with it, the consequences can be permanent if not caught in time. That is what makes regular retinal examination so important, and what makes a thorough approach to it so much more than a routine check.
Dr Vasantha Gowri has been examining retinas in Perambur since Aadithya Eye Care opened in 1999. Her retina clinic covers the full range of medical retinal conditions: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular oedema, central and branch retinal vein occlusion, and macular degeneration. Every patient with diabetes who comes to the clinic is advised on annual dilated retinal assessment, and those with existing changes are followed up at intervals matched to how active the condition is.
In-house OCT imaging means cross-sectional scans of the retinal layers are available on the day of the consultation to no waiting for a referral, no separate appointment at a scanning centre. The image is reviewed in the consultation room with the patient, which helps explain findings in a way that a written report alone cannot. Questions worth asking before your appointment. These answers reflect what we tell patients at Aadithya Eye Care.
Sudden floaters (new spots or cobwebs in your vision), flashes of light, a shadow or curtain across part of your field of vision, or sudden blurring that does not improve with blinking are all signs that need prompt attention. A retinal tear or detachment is an emergency. Gradual loss of central vision, or straight lines appearing wavy or distorted, suggests a macular condition and should also be assessed without delay. If in doubt, call us rather than waiting.
A dilated fundus examination using the slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope gives a clear view of the peripheral and posterior retina, macula and optic disc. OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is also available in-house to it produces a cross-sectional image of the retinal layers that is particularly valuable for detecting macular oedema, ARMD or diabetic changes. At least once a year after a diabetes diagnosis, even if your vision seems completely normal. Diabetic retinopathy develops without symptoms in its early and even intermediate stages to by the time blurring or floaters appear, more treatment is typically needed. If changes are already visible, checks may be recommended every 3 to 6 months. See our diabetic eye care page for more on what to expect.
Yes, and the earlier, the better. Mild-to-moderate diabetic retinopathy is managed through good blood sugar control, blood pressure management and regular monitoring. When leakage or abnormal vessel growth is detected, laser photocoagulation can halt progression. Macular oedema to the swelling at the centre of the retina that causes blurred vision to may be treated with targeted laser or, in some cases, intravitreal injections. The sooner retinal changes are caught, the more treatment options are available.
