Cataract surgery has changed enormously over the past over 25 years, and Dr Vasantha Gowri has practised through all of it. Her training at Madras Medical College gave her the surgical foundation; 25 years of operating has given her the judgment that training alone cannot supply. When she assesses a cataract, the decision is not simply about the clouding of the lens to it is about the whole eye, the patient's life, and what outcome is realistic.
At Aadithya Eye Care, every cataract patient is examined with a slit lamp, biometry for IOL power calculation, and where appropriate, additional imaging to check the cornea and retina before any surgery is planned. Nothing is assumed. Patients have occasionally arrived convinced they need an operation only to be told the cataract does not yet justify one. That kind of honest assessment is what keeps patients returning to Perambur rather than going to larger, busier facilities elsewhere in Chennai.
The surgery itself is stitch-free phacoemulsification, arranged at a partner hospital: the lens is emulsified with ultrasound through a micro-incision and a foldable intraocular lens is inserted, usually as a day-care procedure, so most patients are back home the same day. Most patients see clearly within a few days. The eye settles fully over 4 to 6 weeks as the lens stabilises and the eye adapts. Vision may vary slightly in the first week, which is normal. You can use the operated eye for reading and screens within a day or two, though we advise avoiding swimming and dusty environments for a few weeks.
The right time is when the cataract is affecting your daily activities to reading, driving, recognising faces, or watching television comfortably. There is no single threshold at which surgery becomes mandatory. We examine the lens, measure your vision and have a conversation about your life. A monofocal lens corrects vision at one distance, usually distance, so reading glasses are still needed for close work. A multifocal lens is designed to give usable vision at multiple distances and can reduce dependence on glasses after surgery. No. Cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, typically anaesthetic eye drops, at the partner hospital we arrange it through. You are awake throughout and the procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients find it far less uncomfortable than they expected. You will need someone to accompany you home, as your eye will be covered and your vision reduced on that side immediately after the procedure.
